es war einmal ein Land, in dem jedes Gespräch, jede Meinungsäußerung, jede Kritik an den Mächtigen das Ende der materiellen, seelischen oder körperlichen Unversehrtheit bedeuten konnte. Öffentliche Versammlungen, öffentlicher Diskurs war reglementiert und zensiert. Selbst die eigenen vier Wände boten keinen Schutz, jedes Telefon war auch eine Wanze, die von den Lakaien des Staatsapparats jederzeit aktiviert werden konnte.

This is the English description of Benno Flügel’s non-fiction book, which was published on the 4th of June 2026.

A Theory of Systems for the Polycrisis. Drawing upon Luhmann, Rosa, Arendt, Camus, and Sauer, this work weaves together sociology, philosophy, and contemporary analysis into a synthesis that investigates the structural shifts of our time: economically, technologically, and culturally. Comprising a main essay in six parts and 25 appendices.

The work’s analytical core is an examination of the functional systems of contemporary society in the tradition of Luhmann — politics, financial economy, real economy, science, media, culture, religion, and the tech ecosystem. Building on Rosa, it diagnoses a technological acceleration of financial economy, algorithmic media systems, and tech ecosystem, whose logic spreads to the other functional systems and destabilises them. The resulting polycrisis affects social strata with different intensity; a causal analysis of is developed through Sauer’s class theory. As a counter-architecture, the work proposes the Luhmann antithesis: paradoxical guiding distinctions, communicative reflexivity, and multi-systemic connectivity. The main essay concludes with proposals for an institutional architecture and a humanist stance grounded in Arendt and Camus.

The main essay is flanked by twenty-five appendices that apply the analytical framework to specific fields. Methodologically, they treat the theoretical traditions of complexity (Hayek, Heisenberg, evolutionary biology), the relation between Sauer’s and Rosa’s diagnoses, the algorithmic norm, and the social-psychological preconditions of collective mobilisation. Socially, they examine multi-level marketing, the manosphere, the tech ideology, and the figure of the class- and culture-boundary-crosser. Culturally, the inquiries range from Schlingensief and Hochhuth to women in comedy, from sport as a mass psychology of resilience to global mediation through music, literature, and art, and to the erosion of cinema by streaming. Existential appendices treat hope, ageing, and the place of the individual in the polycrisis. The appendices are written to stand on their own — readers familiar with the main essay can move between them freely.

It has a significant impact on the people around me when I constantly look at my smartphone. During that time, I am essentially not there for those around me: I am physically present, yet mentally in the virtual world, distracted by communication with people who are somewhere else. It is a paradoxical situation: I am physically there, but not present. Adults can adjust to this. It probably leads them to look at their own smartphones as well. The result is a group of people who spend time together, yet neither engage with nor talk to one another: teenagers on the street, at bus stops, friends in cafés, families in restaurants.

While the German economy has stagnated for six years, digital platforms have been increasing their profits to previously unheard-of levels. Google’s parent company Alphabet alone made 125 billion dollars in profit last year, roughly as much as Germany’s 40 largest listed corporations combined. The dominance of digital platforms does not remain without consequences. Due to their monopolies in their respective markets, which they defend through aggressive strategies, they enrich themselves at the expense of business customers and consumers. They leverage their technological advantages to charge inflated prices for their services and products. Growing economic dissatisfaction over affordability feeds resentment among the population and ultimately leads to a crisis of democracy and the rise of authoritarian rule, which relies on the increasing concentration of power in the economy and society. This essay analyses the situation from an economic perspective and discusses options for action to safeguard digital sovereignty.

Le monde a changé. Les médias numériques transforment nos vies plus profondément que toute autre innovation du siècle dernier. Les smartphones ont pénétré les recoins les plus éloignés de nos vies et ont bouleversé de nombreux aspects de notre quotidien. De nos jours, nous pouvons facilement nous rendre dans des endroits reculés grâce à la navigation, accéder au savoir collectif de l’humanité via les moteurs de recherche et rester en contact avec nos amis sur les réseaux sociaux, même s’ils vivent à l’autre bout de la planète. Et à l’avenir aussi, la mise en réseau mondiale restera la source du progrès technologique, et aucun problème ne semble trop grand pour être résolu par les nouveaux prophètes de la Silicon Valley. Mais regarder des vidéos de chats en dînant au restaurant avec sa famille améliore-t-il vraiment notre qualité de vie ? Fait-on partie de l’avant-garde sociale si l’on parvient à mettre en scène l’illusion d’une vie heureuse et épanouie sur les réseaux sociaux, même si elle repose sur le mensonge et l’auto-illusion ? Notre société devient-elle plus agréable à vivre lorsque notre espace public se fragmente de plus en plus, jusqu’à ce que chacun se soit confortablement installé dans sa bulle numérique personnalisée et ne soit plus accessible aux problèmes et préoccupations de ceux qui pensent différemment ? Nous, au Radical Anti Smartphone Front, disons clairement : NON ! Non à la communication parallèle avec des personnes absentes en présence d’autres, non à l’expression de notre propre narcissisme, et non à la division croissante de notre société ! Et nous disons clairement NON à l’utilisation excessive des smartphones, qui empoisonne progressivement notre vie sociale. À la place, nous disons OUI à tout ce qui rend nos vies véritablement dignes d’être vécues : l’amitié, la liberté, l’amour et la solidarité. Notre credo est donc : Moins de stories, plus d’histoires ! Moins d‘insta, plus d’instants ! Danser, et non scroller ! Nous sommes le Radical Anti Smartphone Front !
